SVMC Brings the Next Generation of Physicians to Downtown Bennington

Originally published by Southwestern Vermont Medical Center on June 24, 2026

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center is making a major investment in both health care access and downtown Bennington through development of a new Dartmouth Health Family Medicine Residency. The program will be located within Phase II of the Putnam Block, bringing medical education directly into the heart of downtown.

The effort began with significant community momentum: the SVHC Foundation’s Summer Gala raised more than $981,000 toward the residency build-out. Beyond creating a new medical training facility, the project addresses one of rural Vermont’s most persistent workforce challenges — recruiting and retaining primary care physicians. It also adds a major institutional use to the continuing redevelopment of the Putnam Block, demonstrating how health care, workforce development and downtown investment can reinforce one another.
