$2.5 Million Investment Targets Bennington County’s Housing Shortage

A new partnership between the Vermont State Treasurer’s Office and The Bank of Bennington is bringing $2.5 million in low-interest financing to housing projects throughout Bennington County. The Building Up Bennington initiative is designed to help developers construct new homes and bring vacant or underused properties back into productive use.

The need is significant. Bennington County Regional Commission estimates the county will need approximately 1,500 additional homes by 2030. Early discussions with developers suggested the initial investment could create at least 13 units, and potentially considerably more if funding is used to rehabilitate existing properties. Housing remains one of Southwestern Vermont’s most important economic-development challenges because employers cannot grow their workforce without places for that workforce to live.
